Donation

Daily, we get calls from people like Geneva who don't know where else to turn. Geneva is 89 years old and legally blind. One Monday she called Williamsburg Area Faith in Action in a panic. Her eye, which had been operated on two months earlier, was bothering her and her eye-specialist in Richmond wanted to see her the next day. Despite the short notice, we were able to find a volunteer to drive her to the appointment. At that appointment the specialist said he needed to see her again on Friday. Again, we quickly lined up a volunteer. On Friday Geneva was informed her eye had deteriorated and required further surgery to preserve her sight. Surgery was scheduled for the following Monday and she would need to go back for a follow-up on Tuesday.

We were able to get Geneva to Richmond for her eye surgery and follow up appointments. Geneva called to thank everyone who made it possible for her to get the medical care she needed. "I don't know what I would do without you. I might have lost the little vision I have left, instead I'm able to read again!"

Memorial/Honorarium Gifts

A gift in honor or memory of a beloved friend or associate can be the most appropriate way to express a lasting tribute. To honor someone at an important milestone in his or her life, for instance a birthday, anniversary or the birth of a child, is also an ideal way to give a special gift to that person. A contribution in someone's memory creates a lasting commemoration of that person and of your friendship. It also enables WFIA to continue providing services to the elderly, chronically ill and disabled without charge.

Each of these gifts is acknowledged with a letter to the honored person or to the family of the person in whose name the gift is made. Notification does not include the amount of the gift. In addition, the donor also receives a separate acknowledgment of his or her contribution.

Types of Bequests

  • Beneficiary Designation Bequest. Naming Williamsburg Area Faith in Action as the primary beneficiary (or one of several primary beneficiaries) of your IRA or life insurance policy is one of the most straightforward and tax efficient ways to make a planned gift. The beneficiary designation amount should be made as a percentage of the IRA account or life insurance policy. Before making any beneficiary changes, you should discuss your proposed changes with your trusted advisor, especially if there are other charities or family members that you also wish to benefit.
  • Specific Bequest. A specific bequest in a donor's will or trust is one of the most popular ways to make a planned gift to Williamsburg Area Faith in Action. The bequest may be large or small, restricted or unrestricted, according to your wishes. The bequest may be for a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, or a percentage of the residuary estate.
  • Residuary Bequest. Williamsburg Area Faith in Action may be named to receive the `rest, residue and remainder" of your estate, after all debts, taxes, and bequests have been paid.
  • Contingent Bequest. A contingent bequest is one that takes effect only in the event other beneficiaries fail to survive you. It serves an important function by preventing your property from being administered by the default intestacy results of Virginia and avoid going to remote relatives when there are no successor beneficiaries named.
